NORTHWESTERN RING-NECK SNAKEDiadophis punctatus occidentalis©Gary Nafis
A small thin snake with smooth shiny scales. Length is variable from 8” to 34”. Dorsal coloring is dark bluish to black. Ventral coloring is bright orange to red the entire length of the underside of the body with a bright orange to red ring around the neck. This snake has large non-grooved teeth in the rear of the upper jaw and a mild venom. This snake is not considered dangerous to humans.
This is an extremely secretive species. Usually found under the cover of rocks, fallen wood, bark, boards or other surface debris. Occasionally comes out of hiding on cloudy days, at dusk, or during the night. When disturbed it coils its tail into a corkscrew to expose the underside which is normally bright red. It may also smear musk and empty the foul smelling contents of the cloaca.
