MANDARIN DUCK (Male) ©al mawash hani
Location:
Found throughout Southeast Asia, Soviet Union, China, large populations also found in Japan and England
Status: Least Concern
Facts:
Other than being considered the most beautiful of duck species, there is just about nothing fascinating about these birds…and for much of the summer the male molts and loses his colored feathers, which do not return until the fall
Mandarin ducks in Britain are the descendants of captive-bred ducks which escaped or were deliberately released. Mandarins are one of the few duck species which are not hunted for food - apparently they taste really bad!
