njwight: The coconut crab is the largest arthropod on earth and lives on islands in the tropical Indian and Pacific oceans. I met this guy on Chumbe Island in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Zanzibar in Tanzania. They are quite huge and can weigh up to 20lbs and their claws can open coconuts-so keep your fingers clear. They are nocturnal, and I could hear them clicking and clattering around outside my treehouse. They are sometimes referred to as “robber crabs” because of their penchant for stealing shiny objects. Sadly, because they are considered a delicacy by many, some say they are currently facing extinction.
